Fed: ACTU to campaign against sacking las changes

MELBOURNE, Feb 11 AAP - Australia's unions claim job security for two million workersis at risk under changes to labour laws proposed by the federal government.

Exempting small businesses from unfair dismissal laws would remove the job securityand legal rights of more than two million Australian workers, ACTU president Sharan (Sharan)Burrow said in a statement.

"Similar legislation was rejected by the Senate in the last Parliament," she said.

"John Howard's third term agenda is so lightweight he appears willing to recycle somefailed anti-worker laws that could make life harder and more insecure for millions ofpeople."

A coalition of community, union, student and advocacy groups would begin campaigningagainst the plans today, she said.

"The current dismissal laws only prohibit unfair behaviour and are not a major burdenon small business," she said.

"There is no evidence for the government's repeated claims that unfair dismissal lawshurt jobs growth.

"In the last comprehensive Commonwealth survey, less than 1 per cent of small businessesgave unfair dismissal laws as a reason for not hiring staff."

Last November, a full bench of the Federal court found there was no link between dismissallaws and unemployment, she said.

"The court found: `In the absence of any evidence about the matter, it seems to usthe suggestion of a relationship between unfair dismissal laws and employment inhibitionis unproven'," she said.
